The Hans Linzer tm "Testore" Model Violin

When it comes to violins for the beginner and the intermediate student, what is offered at a reasonable price, in most cases does not produce a reasonable sound.   Often a beginners violin is poorly constructed, has a very thick lacquer coating, is fitted with a lesser quality of rosewood or stained white wood fingerboard and pegs.  Yes, indeed you can find a violin outfit on internet auction sites for very little money.  The problem is that they are of very low quality, poorly or not set up at all, have inferior strings, bridges, etc and are more of a frustration for students and teachers alike.  Most of what we have heard have a "tinny" and non resonant sound.  These instruments are not graduated (variable thicknessing of the top and back) properly or at all .   The thick lacquer finish actually stiffles the sound.

In our many years in the string instrument business, we have seen it all.  Violin samples come to us from many factories throught the world and most are not tonally suitable or are priced in such a manner as to be beyond the amount a parent is willing to spend for a beginner where the outcome is uncertain.  The violin is a difficult instrument to play and any frustration can cause a possibly promising talent to not advance or to not want to continue studying at all.   Rentals are not a good solution either as a rental instruments are usually not set up properly in most cases and the cost of a yearly rental can exceed the actual value of the violin.

After many years of searching, we have finally found a violin which we think is a superior student instrument at a very affordable price. These are completely hand made in the Italian style of the Testore family.  Carlo Giuseppe and Carlo Antonio Testore were 18th century Milanese violin makers who fashioned very fine instruments using wood which was very plain in appearance.  They used maple with little or no figure.   Their wood was chosen for its tonal quality.  The Testores made instruments for the working musician not the aristocracy as did Amati and Stradivari.  The simple working musician of the day could purchase a good sounding violin at a reasonable price from the Testores family.

The Hans Linzer tm  "Testore" Model violin replicates the style and aesthetic of those classic old makers.  These violins provide the student with the mellow, resonant sound needed to appreciate what the violin should sound like.   Each one is expertly adjusted in our shop and are set up to exceed MENC standards.  All have ebony pegs and fingerboards.  They are supplied with either an ebony tail piece with individual fine tuners or a metal fine tuning tailpiece (customers choice)  The customer also has the option of choosing Perlon core strings (mellow) or metal core strings (brighter)  Please take a moment to study the pictures of this outstanding beginner-intermediate violin.  Notice the detail in the scroll carving, the expertly inlayed purfling (the two black lines around the edge of the top and back) the cleanly cut corners and ff holes.  The wood used for the back, ribs and scroll closeley resembles the wood choice of the two Testore makers.  What you can not see in the pictures is the accuracy of the graduation.  That becomes apparent when the instrument is played.

These are avialable in limited quantities in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 4/4 sizes, all sizes are in stock and ready for shipment.
