Baroque Instrument Offerings

We now offer a selection of  Viols and Violins in the Baroque style.  Many of these are one of a kind instruments and are not available in large quantities and when sold we will not be able to replace that exact style.  Some of these fine instruments are sized so that violinists, violists and cellists who are interested in playing on a baroque style instrumenet, can do so due to the fact that they are proportioned to sizes which are comfortable to players. These instruments are made specially for us by some of the best Italian trained makers in China.  As such they are reasonably priced so that one can "go baroque without going broke."

A 16 inch, 5 string Viola Pomposa: This is an instrument which can be played on the shoulder (da spalla) or on the leg (da gamba) It is tuned: C,G,G,A, and E. Its viol shape is typical of the early baroque and the rib height is the same as a violist would be used to.  This Viola Pomposa is set up in our shop and comes ready to play.  Playing the Bach Suite on this instrument is a joy.  Supplied with a chin rest for those who prefer to play it on the shoulder.  We can also supply extra E strings (16") which are difficult to find.  Since the edges overlap the ribs, a traditonal  rigid viola shoulder rest can be used on the instrument.  Supplied with a light weight oblong case and choice of modern style or baroque style bow.

A 14" Quinton (can also be set up as a Pardessus de Viole)

An 18 inch Tenore Viola

A Bass  6 string Viola da Gamba

A 4/4 violin after Johann Anton Gedler
